RICK RUBIN Supremo speaks out!

Here's an excerpt from the “Kerrang interview” with Rick Rubin about the “Till Def Us Do Part” sampler, which is about the Masters of Reality. You can find the full interview in Kerrang! issue no. 341 from May 18, 1991.

STILL WORKING our way down the list we come to Masters Of Reality:

One track from them: ´Doraldinas Prophecies´, I loved their first album, ´The Blue Garden´. This sounds like something that could have been taken from those sessions.

“I spent two-and-a-half years making ´The Blue Garden´, says Rubin, “and I really liked it a lot. Then the band in their original form broke up. I was kinda pissed of cos they were such a great band. It wasn´t the right thing to do.”

But why – just when it seemed as though they were on the verge of a major breakthrough? Did they hate each other?

“Yeah. They´d been a band for 10 years and them making an album was the pinnacle of their career.” He says, his voice betraying the frustration. “It really is a shame. I was broken-hearted by the whole thing because I was so close to it for so long. This was a track that I recorded for the album but then ended up not finishing.”

Ein Song von ihnen: „Doraldinas Prophecies“. Ich liebte ihr erstes Album „The Blue Garden“. Dieser Song klingt, als könnte er aus diesen Sessions stammen.

„Ich habe zweieinhalb Jahre an ‚The Blue Garden‘ gearbeitet“, sagt Rubin, „und es hat mir wirklich sehr gut gefallen. Dann löste sich die Band in ihrer ursprünglichen Besetzung auf. Ich war ziemlich sauer, weil sie so eine tolle Band waren. Es war nicht die richtige Entscheidung.“

Aber warum – gerade als es so aussah, als stünden sie kurz vor dem großen Durchbruch? Hassten sie sich?

„Ja. Sie waren zehn Jahre lang eine Band, und die Veröffentlichung ihres Albums war der Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere“, sagt er, und seine Stimme verrät die Frustration. „Es ist wirklich schade. Ich war total am Boden zerstört, weil ich so lange so eng mit der Band verbunden war.“ Das war ein Titel, den ich für das Album aufgenommen, aber dann nicht fertiggestellt habe.“
